Summary of Discussions & Decisions

State Worker & Higher Ed Bargaining

President Russ Born provided an update on the State of Oregon workers' tentative agreement, which includes a 6.5% COLA, a new 11th pay step, and protected health insurance. He also noted their $15 million class-action lawsuit victory over issues with the Workday payroll system rollout.

Membership Drive & Engagement

A membership contest running from August 21 to October 16, with gift cards for members who sign up new colleagues. Union conversations are permitted during work hours as long as work is being done. Increasing this number is a top priority before bargaining.

Upcoming Events

Secretary Kary Meredith announced a Member & Family Bowling Night for October 22nd at the MU's Lanes & Games. President Russ Born also mentioned plans for an informal after-work happy hour, with details to come.

Workday Payroll System Transition

The upcoming transition to the Workday payroll system was discussed. Members were strongly advised to save copies of their August pay stubs and leave accrual records before the potential September 1 rollout. A committee is being formed to monitor this transition for errors, and members (especially those with fiscal experience) were encouraged to volunteer.

Workplace Issues & Contract Education

A discussion about the university's time clock rounding policy led to a consensus that the practice often benefits the employer. Members were encouraged to add "end time clock rounding" as a priority on the upcoming bargaining survey. Additionally, leadership helped a member understand their rights regarding the use of comp time, clarifying that management cannot force an employee to use it unless they are at the maximum accrual limit.

Communications Team Update

Communications Chair Jax Johnson announced the formation of a new volunteer Communications Team to help with social media and shaping the narrative as we head into bargaining. He encouraged members with an interest in communications to join.

Layoff Support Update

Our union's efforts to support laid-off workers, detailing challenges in coordinating with WorkSource Oregon and OSU HR. Our union had to fight to ensure support trainings were offered after initial requests were ignored by management. Another training session is scheduled for September 3rd.
