Purpose: Immediate response workflow, not legal advice

First 10 Minutes

  1. Do not panic and do not improvise answers.
  2. Ask: "Could this meeting lead to discipline?"
  3. Request steward representation immediately.
  4. Save the communication and any deadline shown.
  5. Contact your steward and forward all documents.

Use this script: "I am requesting union representation before I answer questions or provide a written statement."

I received your request to meet/provide a statement. I am requesting union representation before participating. Please provide available times that allow my steward to attend.

If Asked for a Written Statement

  • Request time to review with your steward first.
  • Do not guess facts or speculate.
  • Do not waive representation rights in writing.
  • Keep your own copy of anything submitted.

Meeting Preparation Checklist

  • Timeline of events with dates and names.
  • Emails, policy references, and prior notices.
  • Questions you want clarified in the meeting.
  • Requested accommodation needs (if any).

During the Meeting

  • Take notes or ask steward to track notes.
  • Answer only what is asked, truthfully and briefly.
  • Ask for clarification if a question is vague.
  • Request breaks to consult your steward when needed.

After the Meeting: 24-Hour Plan

  1. Send your steward your notes immediately.
  2. Confirm next deadlines in writing.
  3. Collect any additional documents discussed.
  4. Start a dated case file for follow-up actions.

What if ELR says I cannot have a steward? +

Repeat your request and contact your steward immediately. Do not voluntarily continue if the meeting could lead to discipline.

Should I talk to coworkers about what happened? +

Coordinate with your steward first. Protect evidence and avoid accidental inconsistencies.
